The fastest Warrington Bank Quay to Euston train takes 1hr 48. Directs run roughly hourly from 05:57 to 21:26, off-peak return £114, annual season £19,072.
The fastest Warrington to London train takes 1 hour 48 minutes, Warrington Bank Quay to London Euston, run by Avanti West Coast with no changes. Directs leave roughly hourly, most of them at 24 minutes past, from 05:57 in the morning to 21:26 at night. Coming back, the last direct from Euston is the 21:10, in at 23:19.
The first thing to get right is the station. Warrington has two in the town centre and they do completely different jobs. Bank Quay sits on the West Coast Main Line and is the only one with a London train. Central, about fifteen minutes’ walk away, sits on the Liverpool to Manchester line and is the one you want for either of those cities. Turning up at the wrong one is the single most common mistake here.
Which station goes where
How long the Warrington to London train takes
Three routes exist and only one of them is worth taking at full price.
- Direct, Avanti West Coast: 1hr 48 to 1hr 50. The 07:22 arrives Euston 09:12, the 11:24 arrives 13:12, the 17:23 arrives 19:12. This is the service to plan around.
- Change at Crewe: 2hr 21. Useful if the direct is sold out or badly timed, and priced identically on walk-up fares.
- Via Birmingham New Street: 4hr 08. Genuinely slow, but Advance singles on it started at £35.50 for our sample date, less than a fifth of the walk-up fare.
Stopping Avanti services also run the direct route in about 2hr 56 and carry the cheapest Advance fares on the fast line, from £60.50 off-peak.
Sundays are the catch: nothing before 09:23
The weekday pattern does not carry over to Sunday, and this is the single detail most likely to ruin a trip. Working from the current Summer 2026 timetable, which runs to Saturday 12 December 2026:
| First from Bank Quay | Arrives Euston | Last from Bank Quay | Arrives | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monday to Friday | 05:57 | 08:00 | 21:23 | 23:40 |
| Saturday | 05:57 | 08:00 | 20:24 | 22:54 |
| Sunday | 09:23 | 12:09 | 21:23 | 01:04 |
On a Sunday there is no Warrington to London train at all before 09:23, three and a half hours later than the rest of the week, and that first Sunday service takes 2hr 46 rather than the weekday 1hr 48. It is not until the 11:21, in at 13:18, that a Sunday journey drops back under two hours. Anything needing you in London for a Sunday morning has to be done the night before.
Saturday is the easier day: the first departure is the same 05:57 as a weekday, but the last one home leaves an hour earlier, at 20:24.
Two hourly patterns, and one of them costs you an hour
Bank Quay gets roughly two southbound departures an hour on a weekday, and they are not the same train:
- The xx:24 group is the fast one. 08:24 in at 10:14, 09:24 in at 11:12, 11:24 in at 13:12, 15:24 in at 17:12: about 1hr 48 to 1hr 50 every time.
- The xx:42 group is the slow one. 07:42 in at 10:38, 08:42 in at 11:38, 12:42 in at 15:40: about 2hr 56, an hour and six minutes longer for the same two stations.
Booking software will happily sell you the xx:42 if it is the next departure, so the eighteen minutes you save by not waiting cost you over an hour on arrival. The exception is late on: after 21:23 the only thing left is the 21:42, which does not run every night and gets in at 01:17.
Timetable data is from the Rail Delivery Group’s licensed feed and is current for the Summer 2026 timetable; the next timetable change is Sunday 13 December 2026, so re-check anything here after that date.
What it costs
These are the fares quoted for a Monday journey, checked on 9 August 2026. Warrington to London is a long-distance flow, so the peak and off-peak gap is brutal.
| Ticket | Price |
|---|---|
| Off-Peak single | £79.80 |
| Off-Peak return | £114.00 |
| Anytime single | £179.00 |
| Anytime return | £358.00 |
| Advance single, fast direct | from £60.50 |
| Advance single, via Birmingham | from £35.50 |
A morning-peak departure is £179 one way. The same journey four hours later is £79.80. On a day return the gap is starker still: £114 off-peak against £358 Anytime, a difference of £244 for the same two seats.
Season tickets. An annual season from Warrington to London Terminals is £19,072, or £1,831 a month, according to Trainline on 9 August 2026. Adding a Zones 1 to 6 Travelcard takes it to £20,000 a year. The ticket is valid from either Warrington Central or Warrington Bank Quay by any permitted route, which is one of the few places the two stations are treated as one.
At those prices, commuting daily from Warrington to London is a decision about housing costs, not train times. Seven years of that season ticket comes to £133,504, which is more than the median Warrington flat costs to buy outright.
At short notice, the cheap Warrington to London ticket is on the slow train
The fare table above is what you pay. Which train you get for it is a separate question, and it is the one that catches people out. We checked the 10am departures from Warrington Bank Quay on 22 August 2026 for travel two days later, Monday 24 August, and the pattern was clean:
| Departure | Arrives | Time | Cheapest Advance offered |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10:24 direct | 12:12 | 1h 48m | None in Standard, only £129.00 Standard Premium |
| 10:42, change at Crewe | 13:03 | 2h 21m | None in Standard, only £129.00 Standard Premium |
| 10:42 direct, all stops | 13:38 | 2h 56m | £60.50, laddering up through £66.00, £70.00 and £76.00 |
Two things follow. The cheap seat is on the slow train. At two days’ notice the £60.50 Advance existed only on the 2 hour 56 minute service, so the saving against a walk-up Off-Peak Single costs you 1 hour 8 minutes each way. On a day return that is well over two hours of your day for about £19.
And at short notice the Advance is the wrong ticket entirely. With the fast trains’ standard Advances gone, the only Advance left on them was £129.00 in Standard Premium, which is £49.20 more than simply turning up and buying the £79.80 Off-Peak Single. If you are booking inside a few days for a fast train, ignore the Advance and buy Off-Peak; the Advance only wins when you book far enough out to catch the bottom of the ladder.
Fares checked on traintimes.org.uk, which shows the full Advance price ladder rather than just the lowest available fare.
Coming back: the last train from London to Warrington
Getting home is the tighter half of the trip. The last direct train from London Euston to Warrington Bank Quay leaves at 21:10 and arrives at 23:19, a journey of 2 hours 9 minutes, and Advance singles on it were going for £35 when we checked for Monday 17 August 2026.
Miss it and there is no sensible second option. The 21:39 goes via Manchester Piccadilly and Preston with an overnight wait, arriving 05:55 the next morning, and the 23:30 changes at Wolverhampton with a three-hour gap, arriving 06:16. Both are technically journeys and neither is a way home. If the evening might run late, buy a flexible Off-Peak return rather than an Advance tied to the 21:10.
The commutes people here actually make
Far more Warrington people travel to Manchester and Liverpool than to London, and those journeys are cheap and quick.
- Warrington Central to Manchester Oxford Road: fastest 20 minutes. Anytime day single £10.70, day return £12.60, Advance from £6.20. Slower Northern stopping services take 37 to 38 minutes.
- Warrington Central to Liverpool Lime Street: fastest 29 minutes. Anytime day single £7.40, day return £11.20, Advance from £5.60.
- Warrington Bank Quay to Manchester Oxford Road: direct in about 29 minutes on Transport for Wales services, which saves the walk across town.
If you are travelling from Bank Quay to Liverpool, note that most itineraries route you on foot to Central first. The walk is timetabled at 15 minutes and it is the reason a Bank Quay to Lime Street journey shows as 49 minutes when the train part is 29.
Parking at the stations
The council runs contract parking at Warrington West station: £140 a year for a Monday to Friday permit, or £170 a year for a seven-day one, both running April to March and charged pro rata if you join part way through. That is under £3 a week for weekday commuter parking, and the council’s own contract parking page says spaces are currently available.
In the town centre the same scheme covers Time Square multi-storey at £640 a year and Warrington Town Hall at £840 a year, though the Town Hall has a waiting list. Both are a short walk from Bank Quay and Central.

What time is the first and last Warrington to London train?
The first direct leaves Bank Quay at 05:57 and the last at 21:26. In the other direction the last direct out of Euston is the 21:10, arriving Warrington 23:19.
Is there a Sunday train from Warrington to London?
Yes, but not early. The first Sunday departure from Bank Quay is the 09:23, arriving Euston at 12:09, against 05:57 on a weekday, and Sunday journeys run slower: that first one takes 2hr 46. The last Sunday train south is the 21:23, in at 01:04.
How much is a train from Warrington to London?
An Off-Peak single is £79.80 and an Off-Peak return £114. Anytime is £179 single and £358 return, so a morning-peak departure costs more than twice an off-peak one. Advance singles start from £60.50 on the fast direct and £35.50 on the slow route via Birmingham. Fares checked 9 August 2026.
Is the cheapest Warrington to London train the fastest one?
No, and usually the opposite. At that notice the £79.80 walk-up Off-Peak Single was the better buy on a fast train.
Which Warrington station do I need for London?
Warrington Bank Quay, on the West Coast Main Line. Turning up at Warrington Central is the most common mistake made here, and it costs you the fifteen minutes it takes to walk between them.
